Web Page Building Handbook
III. Editing & publishing basics
Editing: Creating web pages with HTML editors
Graphics insertions
You have to specify an image and make sure that it is on the server.
This means all non-text content!
Email Links
at hyperlink space, type "mailto:" and then the full e-mail address (ie. "mailto:username@servername.com" or "mailto:ncfriends@juno.com")
Hyperlinks
at hyperlink space type full web address (ie. www.ncym-fum.org/index.htm or www.ncym-fum.org/missions.htm where "missions" is the file name which you used to save that page. The file name for this purpose must be 8 characters or less.)
Fonts
Size - avoid excessively large and small font sizes (monitor sizes vary and smaller text may be difficult to read)
Color - make sure there is adequate contrast between your background and body text color, blue is usually used to indicate a link, and violet usually indicates a followed link
Background - avoid using "busy" graphics as background (they can be distracting)
Publishing: Loading Web Pages to Web Servers
Step 1: Find a site that will host (provide a home) for your web site. Many communities provide Community Web Services. ("The Depot" is Greensboro’s example.) Also, free Christian web services are available. One example is "Kronos" (www.kronoss.com). Although there are other free web hosts (like "Angelfire," and "Geocities"), we recommend using community or Christian oriented sites. The main reason is that these sites are less likely to append content (advertisements, banners, etc.) to your site that might compromise your purpose.
Step 2: Upload files from your local machine to your web host (server). Most HTML editors include a utility that will allow you to upload your files. However, most free web hosts require you to use their on-line (web-based) File Transfer Protocol (FTP) utility. (It’s actually a web page that has been modified to allow you to transfer your files.)
